HUD secretary stays home from Obama speech :Post#365 at this blog

WASHINGTON -- One member of President Barack Obama's Cabinet has been picked to watch his State of the Union address on television.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan has been tapped to stay away from the speech in case a calamity were to strike the Capitol.

The White House typically selects one member of the Cabinet to remain in a safe place and skip attending the event that draws the Cabinet, top White House officials, Congress and the Supreme Court.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said shortly before the speech that Donovan had been given that assignment.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also is missing, but that's because she is traveling in London.

Obama's big speech...Another Haitian survivor...North Korean artillery

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will say in his State of the Union address tonight that he won't walk away from Americans who need health care. But he'll also agree that Americans have "deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works." Obama's speech begins at 9 p.m. Eastern time.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Authorities in Haiti say a 17-year-old girl found alive in the rubble of a home today may have had access to water from a bathroom. Rescuers say she mumbled something about having a little Coca-Cola. It's rare for someone to survive more than three days without water.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — John Edwards says he still cares deeply about his wife as the public learns of the couple's separation. Elizabeth Edwards' sister tells the AP, "She's doing as well as you could expect." The disclosure came a week after Edwards confirmed that he fathered a child with his mistress.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Another Madoff is coming under scrutiny by investigators looking into one of Wall Street's biggest frauds. A lawyer for Bernard Madoff's brother, Peter, says his client has been told he's the "subject" of the criminal investigators' wide-ranging probe. Bernard Madoff is serving a 150-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in the multi-billion dollar Ponzi scheme.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has reportedly fired more artillery shells toward its disputed western sea border with South Korea. Text of Obama State of the Union speech =8

Even as we prosecute two wars, we are also confronting perhaps the greatest danger to the American people the threat of nuclear weapons. I have embraced the vision of John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan through a strategy that reverses the spread of these weapons, and seeks a world without them. To reduce our stockpiles and launchers, while ensuring our deterrent, the United States and Russia are completing negotiations on the farthest-reaching arms control treaty in nearly two decades. And at April's Nuclear Security Summit, we will bring forty-four nations together behind a clear goal: securing all vulnerable nuclear materials around the world in four years, so that they never fall into the hands of terrorists. These diplomatic efforts have also strengthened our hand in dealing with those nations that insist on violating international agreements in pursuit of these weapons. That is why North Korea now faces increased isolation, and stronger sanctions sanctions that are being vigorously enforced. That is why the international community is more united, and the Islamic Republic of Iran is more isolated. And as Iran's leaders continue to ignore their obligations, there should be no doubt: they, too, will face growing consequences.

That is the leadership that we are providing -- engagement that advances the common security and prosperity of all people. We are working through the G-20 to sustain a lasting global recovery. We are working with Muslim communities around the world to promote science, education and innovation. We have gone from a bystander to a leader in the fight against climate change. We are helping developing countries to feed themselves, and continuing the fight against HIV/AIDS. And we are launching a new initiative that will give us the capacity to respond faster and more effectively to bio-terrorism or an infectious disease a plan that will counter threats at home, and strengthen public health abroad.

As we have for over sixty years, America takes these actions because our destiny is connected to those beyond our shores. But we also do it because it is right. That is why, as we meet here tonight, over 10,000 Americans are working with many nations to help the people of Haiti recover and rebuild. That is why we stand with the girl who yearns to go to school in Afghanistan; we support the human rights of the women marching through the streets of Iran; and we advocate for the young man denied a job by corruption in Guinea

Obama's big speech...Medicare study...Wizards' suspensions

WASHINGTON (AP) — About two-thirds of President Barack Obama's State of the Union address tonight before Congress will be on the economy. Much of what he's expected to say will be familiar, but Obama will also ask for another stimulus package, and a three-year freeze in some domestic spending.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A new study says when Medicare copays go up -- even just a few dollars -- it leads to fewer doctor visits and longer hospital stays. The tendency was most pronounced among blacks, people living in lower-income neighborhoods, and those with chronic illnesses.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The marriage of former presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth is apparently moving toward divorce. A friend of Elizabeth Edwards says the couple has separated. Under North Carolina law, they must be separated for a year before they can divorce.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — The seven-month struggle by Honduras' ousted president to return to power is apparently over. Manuel Zelaya has left his refuge in the Brazilian Embassy to fly to the Dominican Republic. He was pushed from power last June in a dispute over changing the Honduran Constitution.

NEW YORK (AP) — Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton of the NBA's Washington Wizards have learned their fate for their "guns in the locker room" incident last year. NBA commissioner David Stern has suspended them for the rest of the season. Arenas has pleaded guilty to a gun charge, and will be sentenced March 26.
