Gitmo Detainee Tried in DC?

A Gitmo detainee tried in DC? Really? Apparently the present administration believes it is a good idea to try Riduan Isamuddin, better known as Hambali, in Washington D.C. for his crimes. Hambali is accused of being the chief architect of the bombings at a Bali nightclub that killed 202 people.

Nobody is saying exactly what Hambali is going to be charged with before he is brought to the U.S. for a criminal trial. The administration is currently discussing holding a number of trials in the U.S., in either Washington D.C. or New York City, in an effort to show that they do not accept the policies of President George W. Bush in dealing with terrorists. Seems like a pretty high risk move, bringing dangerous terrorists to the very places targeted on September 11, 2001. Read more about the administrations plans to have a Gitmo detainee tried in DC and see a video below.

According to the story here, Hambali was held for years in secret CIA prisons prior to being detained in Guantanamo Bay, and is now going to be brought to the United States for a criminal trial. I can’t tell you how bad of an idea I think this is. Hambali is thought to be Bin Laden’s chief deputy in Indonesia and during interrogation was said to have revealed a plan that consisted of suicide bombings in the United States.

President Obama is going to miss a self-imposed deadline to close Gitmo. I guess the President is finding out that it’s pretty easy to criticize when you don’t have all the information, but once you have all the information that went into the decision you begin to see that the decision wasn’t so bad in the first place. It is pretty easy to say “Close Gitmo!” but it’s not so easy to figure out what to do with those being held there.

I agree with those who say that conducting the trials in Washington D.C. and New York City are going to make those cities even more of a target than they already are. It makes no sense to me to subject those cities to threats that they simply do not need. That’s how I feel about this, but I’d love to hear your opinion. Should we bring suspected terrorists to the United States to hold criminal trials, or should the trials be held outside the U.S. at a place like Gitmo?

D.C. United Drafts DC Native Jordan Graye

Washington, D.C. (January 14, 2010) - D.C. United today selected defender Jordan Graye in the fourth round (55th overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. A Washington DC native and former United Academy player, Graye was United's only selection in the draft.

"We were very pleased to find that Jordan was available in the fourth round and are looking forward to bringing him into the team," said United Head Coach Curt Onalfo. "He's a guy that's played both left back and right back, and he's very athletic. He's a local kid with a lot of strength and ability, and he has a good shot to make our roster."

Graye spent college career at the University of North Carolina. During his senior year in 2009, Graye had his best collegiate season, starting all 22 games the Tar Heels played and tallying two goals and three assists. In 2008 Graye started 23 of 24 games, tallied an assist and helped lead a Tar Heel defense that earned seven shutouts. His sophomore season in 2007 saw him play in 17 games in both the defense and midfield. Though he was redshirted in 2006, his freshman season in 2005 saw him play in four matches and tally an assist.

A Washington, DC native, Graye played for the D.C. United Academy's U-14, U-15, U-16 and U-20 teams. He helped the U-14 squad win the Super Y-League national title in 2001, qualifying for the national champions on three total occasions.

The defender graduated from DeMatha High School, where he was named to the Washington Post All-Met Team and the NSCAA/adidas All-Region III as a senior, and helped lead the team to a WCAC title. Graye has also been with the U.S. National Team at the U-16 and U-17 levels. He spent 2003 at the U.S. U-17 National Team Residency Program and was a member of the U-16 Team in 2002.

DC group wants cause mentioned in Obama address

WASHINGTON — A group that advocates for voting representation in Congress for D.C. residents wants President Obama to mention their cause in his State of the Union address.

The group, D.C. Vote, is asking for suggestions — no more than three sentences — about what Obama should say to support D.C. voting rights during the speech. The district currently elects a representative to Congress, but Eleanor Holmes Norton cannot vote on the House floor.

A bill to give the city of some 600,000 people a vote is currently stalled after an amendment was added that would repeal the city's strict gun registration requirements.

D.C. Vote wants suggested language e-mailed or posted to their Facebook page by Jan. 11. The date of the State of the Union address has not yet been set.
